154 | granlab – movements ep
The Movements EP marks a comeback that we are particularly pleased about: when old companions from the Broque scene release their first EP in seven years, it is definitely worth a dance of joy. Heiko Schwanz, aka Granlab, is in excellent form again and shows that a creative break can also broaden the horizon. The new tracks mark a fresh start, what is evident, on the one hand, from the straightforwardness with which they march onto the dancefloor and, on the other, from the fact that Heiko is experimenting with vocals for the first time, lending some pop appeal and unique signature to the new tracks. Both new tracks revel in their own unique brand of outspoken dancefloor escapism, which reminisces of the club sound that characterized the era at the end of the 90s. The energetic slammer ‘Sometimes I Wake Up’ is full of unabashed techno euphoria, including a stoically circulating acid line, notorious rave signals and distinctive breaks. The strobe- and fog-riddled ‘Movements’ ties in with this, and in its dark urgency seems to have sprung from an imaginary gettogether between Green Velvet and Laurent Garnier. The DML remix of ‘Sometimes…’ is both more relaxed and at the same time dub techno-inspired, giving the track a relaxed, groovy swing, while Westend Ghetto also gives the same track its own unique touch, which seems to be equally influenced by glitchy electronica, dub techno and hip house. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another seven years for Granlab’s next EP.
